The Cincinnati-Dayton Taiko Group was formed in 1999. We are a non-profit arts organization dedicated to promoting Japanese-style taiko drumming through performance and education. Jim Shimko, the music director, holds a Bachelor's degree in Music and has taught music for close to 20 years. He has been involved in taiko drumming for over 8 years.

The Cincinnati-Dayton Taiko Group has several teachers but our first instructor was Joe Kimura of the St. Louis Osuwa Taiko Group. Joe's expertise and love of taiko drumming enabled us to start our group and we are eternally grateful. Joe's sensei was Grandmaster Daihachi Oguchi, the head of the Osuwa School in Japan. Oguchi-sensei is internationally recognized and respected as a leader in traditional Japanese taiko.

We would also like to acknowledge one of our other instructors, Stuart Paton of Burlington Taiko. Stuart is a rare combination of extraordinary performer and outstanding teacher. Stuart's sensei was Grandmaster Seiichi Tanaka of San Francisco Taiko Dojo. Tanaka-sensei founded and developed San Francisco Taiko Dojo into one of the premier taiko groups of North America.

Our style of drumming has a traditional foundation but we emphasize the fun and community spirit of taiko.
