World Dance Stage

  • 11:00-12:00 African Culture University Drum and Dance Ensemble - Dance/Musical theatre depicting African childhood rites of passage "Crossroads to Destiny part I".

  • 12:15-12:45 - Au Shaolin Kung Fu Academy - Lion Dance and demonstrations with a wide range of weaponry performed by children and adults of all ages and various belts. The Academy have a special performance at the Barnes & Noble Bookfair festival fundraiser.

  • 1:00-1:30 - The Lotus Dancers - Arabic/Folkloric Dance/ Belly Dancing. The group will also be performing and teaching Belly Dancing at the Roll Around the World festival fundraiser.

  • 1:45-2:45 African Culture University Drum and Dance Ensemble - Dance/Musical theatre depicting African early adulthood rites of passage "Crossroads to Destiny part II".

  • 3:00-3:30 Irish Dance Workshop - Scott Ellis School of Irish Dance audience participation workshop

  • 3:45-4:30 - Japanese Dancers - Bon Odori Dance.

  • 7:00-8:00 African Culture University Drum and Dance Ensemble - Dance/Musical theatre depicting African latter adulthood rites of passage "Crossroads to Destiny part III".

Community / Student International Showcase: Schedule to be announced. Community talent as well as student groups will be showcasing various performances.

The Department of Modern Languages and Intercultural Studies Theatre: The Kentucky premiere of seven short films from the Academy for Film and Television “Konrad Wolf” in Potsdam-Babelsberg, Germany. Open to the public and shown free of charge, this special 55-minute program will be presented twice on September 27, 2003 (1 and 5 pm). Some films are computer-animated, others utilize clay figure animation, and some rely on traditional film techniques. The themes of the films vary, though a number focus on intercultural communication and the importance of tolerance. Varying in length from 3 to 12 minutes, the films are titled Light, Butterfly, A Clear Case, Knife and Fork Only, The Belly Dancer, Fairy Tale and Winston. More than half the films have never before been shown on the North American continent.

In the Park Performances: Various participants will be performing or demonstrating at their booths.

  • High Cross Society: Celtic traditions organization booth includes the Sons of Thunder drum and pipe "Picti Band" featuring Skip Cleavinger as well as a variety of Martial Arts demonstrations.

Events
A wide variety of performances are offered at the festival and throughout September. The City of Bowling Green and County of Warren, KY have declared September Celebrating International Heritage Month in support of these endeavors.

Insight Celebration of Cultures parade: If you're not an early riser catch the parde LIVE on Channel 5! Parade begins 9am.

Performances: Bands, Dancers, Musicians, and performers of all types fill our stages and the park throughout the day. This years performances feature an African Drum & Dance musical theatre piece continuing throughout the day, depicting Africa rites of passage; Reggae and Salsa and a A quartet from Ulm Germany as well as many other types of performances from around the world. A student/community stage has also been added.

Juried Art Exhibition: The second annual exhibition takes place in 2003. Both professional and emerging artists in various media will be showcased.

• Related Events: Contests, workshops and other special events are planned throughout the year.

  • Roll Around The World, a benefit for the festival at Greenwood Skate Center Friday September 12, 6PM-Midnight. The skating mixer features The Lotus Dancers and a free belly dancing lesson at 8pm and Au Shaolin's Kung Fu Academy with a demonstration and free lesson at 10pm.

  • Downtown Gallery Walk - Area gallery exhibit receptions are featured on September 26, 5-9. Galleries featured include Spencer's Coffeehouse, Lot 916, Memphis Marsha's, Brickyard Cafe, The Boomerang and The Capitol Arts Center.

  • BG Chamber Orchestra presents "Our Towns" - September 22, 7:30pm at the Capitol Arts Center.

  • Poster & Essay Contest - Open to grades K-12. The posters will be judged and displayed at Roll Around the World and then moved to Barnes and Noble where they will be displayed until time for the festival. The essay contest winners will be invited to read their essays at the store on September 13 at 2pm for educators day.

  • Aimon String Quartet in concert - From Ulm Germany. Appearing September 23, 7:30 at the First Christian Church.

  • Bookfair - September 28, 11am-9pm Barnes & Noble donates a portion of designated sales to the festival. A special peformance of "Bedtime Stories from the Shaolin Temple" will be at 2pm. Please print the coupon on the bookfair page so that your purchases can benefit the festival.

  • The Bowling Green International Center presents Faces of Kentucky photo exhibit throughout September. The photos by Tim Brokema feature immigrant and refugee families living in the area.

  • The Pots Place presents exhibits of the ancient cultures of Egypt and India, featuring handmade fabrics, prints and pots. Wednesdays & Saturdays 10am-2pm throughout August & September.

  • Face the Music - At Barnes and Noble September 14, 3pm, the composers of the Bowling Green Chamber Orchestra's commission work "Our Towns" will join in a round table discussion about the creation of the special music.

  • International Storytime - On Friday, Sept 19 at 10:30am and on Saturday Sept 20 at 3pm Barnes and Noble will offer two different International Storytime readings.

Free Activities & Demonstrations: Art workshops, games, passport program and many other free activities for all ages are found at the festival. Many vendors also provide exhibits, demonstrations and activities, some free of charge.
