John Warren Oakes says of the Mark Oval Black Juried Art Exhibition:

John Warren Oakes is a professor of art at Western Kentucky University. He has exhibited in 332 exhbitions and had 32 one man shows. He has served as a juror for numerous exhibitions in the region.

John Warren Oakes is professor of art in the Department of Art at Western Kentucky University. Oakes is a member of the committee that organized the AT HOME: A Kentucky Project with Judy Chicago and Donald Woodman. He was also one of the twenty five profesional artists and student participants in the project. Oakes and Andee Rudloff worked 750 hours on a 1 inch = 1 foot scale model of the two story house, basement and garage replicating all the visual transformations of each area.

Oakes exhibited two prints in the Women at the Mellenia international exhibition at the University of California at Berkely, 2000.

He has taught a section on women artists in art appreciation Art 100 classes. Oakes was asked to join the Woman's Studies faculty in 2000 to teach a class on the history of women in art.

He prepared 30 lectures and the syllabus for a History of Woman Artists course in 2000. He taught the course in the fall of 2000 which was crosslisted with the Women's Studies program and the Department of Art.

Researched Kentucky Women Artists working 1850-1970. Discovered over 750 women artists and presented documentation supporting that the State of Kentucky was unique in the number of women artists and quality of art produced during the period. Curated Women Artists, 1950-1970 Exhibition Kentucky Museum 2001, Owensboro Museum of Art, 2002. Funded in part by the Kentucky Foundation for Women. Wrote essay for the catalog of Kentucky Women Artists, 1850-2000 for Owensboro Museum of

Art 2001. Exhibition received state and regional coverage and was on the cover of the Arts section of the Courier - Journal, the first time that newspaper has ever reported an exhibit at Western on the front page of this section. Exhibition received favorable review from Diane Heilenman, art critic for the Courier - Journal.
Presented lecture on "Is It an Issue in Art?" For WKU Art Guild. 2001.

Wrote article on Women Artists, 1850-1970 for "Across Kentucky". 2001.

Appeared in University Journal with David Lee, a video interview which was aired on KET.

Lecture for Womens Studies Colloqua at the Kentucky Museum. 2001.

Lecture at the Owensboro Museum of Art on Kentucky Women Artists. 2001 and a second lecutre in in 2002 on the exhibition given for Professor Paula Quinn's journalism, class 2001.

Received a $5000.00 summer scholarship to complete research on Kentucky Women Artists and is writing a history and directory of these women artists which will be a record of their accomplishments.

Creating a touring lecture and exhibition of the AT HOME models, Powerpoint presentation, slide show and website of the AT HOME project which will tour several states in the region. Upon completion of the tour the models will be housed at the Flower" in New Mexico, an organization which will provide storage in perpetuity for scholars of the work of Judy Chicago and Donald Woodman and the participants of the AT HOME project.

Oakes has made a collection of slides of women artists' work from all periodsof history which will be available at Womens Studies for use by faculty andstudents.
