Martha Madison's Dance Arts of Bowling Green has been influenced by the diversity of their students. This year the performance group will be presenting a series of dances that they have studied from Russia, China, Serbia and Israel. Included dances: The Hora (Israel) - The Hora is the national dance of Israel. It is thought to have originated in Hungary or Greece. This popular dance has been performed for many years around the world at festival occasions such as wedding and barmitzvahs. The Hora symbolizes national strength and spirit. The goal is to join people together in true celebration by joining hands and being together. Savila Se Bela Loza (Serbia) - Savila se bela loza means "a vine entwined in itself." This is a traditona Serbian line dance called a Kolo. Kolo means wheel which describes the shape of the dance. Serbian kolos are distinguished by their light and bouncy style. Troika (Russia) - The Troika is a Russian dance. The term Russian dance refers to a geographical location in central Russia. A variety of dances are found in Russia relecting the many cultures. The Troika means "three horse". The dance symbolizes the three horses that traditionally drew sleighs for the Russian noble families. Yanko (China)- Yanko, a ribbon dance, is on of the most theatrical dances in China. It was performed as entertainment for royalty with two long and colorful silk ribbons. It later developed into a folk dance, using one single ribbon that was performed in the streets during harvest festivals and other celebrations. |
